A Quick Look at Omega 3
A number of our patients use Omega 3 essential fatty acids (fish oil) for eye health purposes. We have four strong recommendations when choosing from the myriad of choices on the health food aisle.
1. Third party tested - make sure that someone other than the manufacturer has evaluated and validated the ingredients.
2. No fishy smell - if the Omega 3 smells fishy it has oxidized or rancid and should not be used.
3. 1,000 - 2,000 mg. per day - This is our recommended dosage for dry eyes and for the possible prevention of macular degenerative changes.
4. EPA greater than DHA - These are the essential fatty acids and we like to see EPA in a 2:1 or 3:2 ratio over DHA.
We recommend “Nordic Naturals” which can be purchased at our office, in our online store here or through a health food store.
