Eye Diseases

What is it?
A clouding or thickening of the normal lens in the eye. This clouding blocks light from entering the eye and causes vision to be blurry and colors to be faded. Many people with cataracts complain of problems with glare from lights.

Who does it affect?
Eventually, everyone will develop a cataract. It is a normal aging process. Family history, smoking, diabetes and ultraviolet light exposure may make cataracts develop sooner.

How is it treated?
Cataracts can cause a change in prescription so glasses may help in the early phases. Usually when activities are affected, cataract surgery is recommended to restore clear vision. Surgery is performed in a quick, painless manner, often without stitches or shots. Patients can resume most normal activities the day of surgery.
